Thinking of Building a Patio? Here Are Some Helpful Tips

Building a patio is a big project, but with the right approach it’s totally doable for a homeowner. Here’s a logical order of steps and tips to help you succeed:

1. Plan, Plan, Plan

Before lifting a shovel, decide where your patio will sit and how it will connect to your house, driveway, or yard. Set a baseline grade measurement — the exact height where you want the top of the pavers to sit. Base every step of your project off this line. Careful planning will save you from costly mistakes later.

2. Prepare and Compact the Base

Excavate the area to the proper depth. Lay down your gravel or stone dust base in layers, and compact thoroughly after each layer. A solid, level foundation is the single most important step for a patio that won’t shift or settle.

3. Mind the Slope

As you build up your base, make sure the patio is sloped slightly away from buildings. This ensures proper drainage and prevents water from pooling near your home’s foundation.

4. Choose Stones You Can Handle

Select pavers or stone that fit both your design and your ability to work with them. Flagstone and oversized slabs look great, but they can be very heavy and tough to move without equipment. Lighter pavers are easier for DIY projects.

5. Have the Right Tools on Hand

At some point, you’ll need to cut stones to fit edges or corners. Be ready with a grinder and stone blade (or a wet saw) before you start. Having the right tool handy prevents frustrating delays.

6. Lay the Pavers Carefully

Once the base is set and compacted, place your pavers according to your plan. Don’t rush this step — precise placement now prevents headaches later.

7. Fill the Joints

  • For paver patios, sweep in polymeric sand (polysand) to lock everything together and keep weeds down.

  • If you prefer a natural look with larger joints, use manufactured sand — and you can even mix in moss spores to encourage greenery between stones.

DIY or Hire a Pro?

Homeowners can definitely tackle a patio project on their own — it just takes time, patience, and attention to detail. Having the right equipment and tools makes the process much easier and leads to better results. If you’re a weekend warrior who enjoys hands-on projects, go for it. But sometimes, once everything is said and done, it’s worth investing the money up front to have professionals handle the heavy lifting and ensure a flawless finish.
